Fafo is one of Norway's largest communities of applied social research and working with social science research contracts in the areas of employment, welfare policy and living conditions - both nationally and internationally.

Research activities are organized into two departments: Fafo Institute for Labor and Social Research and the Fafo Institute for Applied International Studies. Together we have about 90 employees and is located in our own house in Borggata 2B in Greenland in Oslo.

Fafo Institute for Applied International Studies working in over 20 countries in the Middle East, Africa, Russia, China and the Balkans. The institute specializes in research on living conditions and development strategies in countries in transition phases, development or conflict, and work with the foundation for development policy and peace building. The main activity is the study of living conditions and threats to human security, in cooperation with local and international institutions.

Fafo an emphasis on independent data collection and empirical research. We have a tradition to focus on vulnerable groups in different political and social contexts.

Fafo Institute for Applied International Studies has increased work load and the need for increased capacity on the design and implementation of large surveys.

We are looking for Senior Scientist / Statistician with interest in applied social research in developing countries, or countries affected by economies in transition or conflict. Applicants for the position should have

    * PhD or equivalent qualifications
    * Extensive experience in statistical analysis, particularly with design-based analysis of surveys
    * Five years experience with design and implementation of surveys
    * Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams
    * Solid background in project management
    * International experience and knowledge of China or the Middle East
    * Governor english fluently

The position involves close collaboration with our Research Director based in China, and is central to the design, implementation and quality assurance of research projects

An important part of research is data collection and analysis of living conditions and development in China, the Middle East and Africa, Fafo want to help with research-based knowledge for planning and public debate in these countries. In addition to funding from the Norwegian Research Council is our main customers of Foreign Affairs, the World Bank and UN agencies such as UNRWA, UNICEF and UNDP.

Salaries for contract and benefits such as insurance, pension scheme and flexible working hours. The department currently has 38 researchers.

The working language at the institute is English and knowledge of languages as French, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic or Russian is an advantage. Travel activities must be expected.
